Mormon Church Backing Away From Gay Marriage
Posted on 17:52 by Unknown
There are two interesting articles in Mother Jones I'm linking to in this post about the Mormon Church and how it has backed away from gay marriage. It's interesting to note that both articles mention previous gay presidential candidate, Fred Karger, whom I've been posting about on this blog since the most recent presidential elections began. I've continued to post about his efforts for equality post election because he's remained a strong advocate for gay marriage and equal rights, and a strong voice within the LGBT community. In more ways than one he's made history.
This article talks about how the Mormon Church didn't show up at the supreme court hearings last month.
In the five years since the LDS church sent busloads of the faithful to California to canvass neighborhoods, and contributed more than $20 million via its members to support the initiative, it has all but dropped the rope in the public policy tug of war over marriage equality. The change stems from an even more remarkable if somewhat invisible transformation happening within the church, prompted by the ugly fight over Prop. 8 and the ensuing backlash from the flock.
The article goes into more detail, and mentions Fred Karger who exposed the major role LDS played in prop 8 in California.
This next article gets into more about the Mormon Church, and Fred Karger. And it also mentions a few of the recent developments happening in other states that I've been following closely and posting about as they happen.
If nothing else, the movement against gay marriage has lost a significant source of cash. In March, the Huffington Post reported that a scant 16 Utah residents (a rough proxy for Mormons) had donated a collective total of $1,264 to four state ballot committees fighting same-sex marriage bills. Back in 2008, more than 800 Utah residents gave $2.7 million to support Prop 8.
In other words, the gist of this article talks about how gay marriage has advanced because the Mormon Church has backed away so drastically, which has a great deal to do with funding support. I agree, but I also think it goes deeper than this. I think that more and more LGBT people are coming out, and I think that far more straight people in this country have friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers who are gay and didn't realize it...including Mormons and Catholics. And if you don't think you know someone who is gay, take a closer look at your immediate circle.
